Over the months, I’ve been attending the Internet Marketing Party here in Austin and have a new vision for how I want to do this site.

Specifically, I’ve come to realize that I no longer want this to be a site that focuses on NLP marketing – firstly because I think the only thing left to say about it is to test new things and I haven’t been doing that lately. Secondly, not many people are searching for “NLP marketing.”

Ranking #1 on a keyword doesn’t mean much if it gets less than 400 searches a month. Most of the time it’s hard to monetize that small amount of traffic. Most spell checkers still don’t recognize copywriting as a real word and most humans think you mean copyrighting.

Another interesting observation is that even though I only posted twice in this last year, my biggest traffic month in the past 3 years was October 2010. That tells me that there’s a steady interest in this topic but also that no one else is trying very hard to compete on this keyword.

I’ll leave up all the post I’ve done this far if anyone is specifically interested in weaving NLP into copywriting. I am going to take down my hypnotic writing course and eventually put it up as a ClickBank product so others can sell it too.

On to the new vision – I’m planning to do a curation site for starting a new business and getting new business ideas. Eventually I plan to roll out the modeling projects I’ve done because most of them relate to gaining skills that would be useful to anyone starting a new business.

Least you fret, it’s not going to be another internet marketing site. A curation site tries to take all the incoming news from anywhere on the internet and reference it and comment on it.

My intention is to make this the blog to read for getting new business ideas and starting a business. It’s not going to be my advise but rather my comment on all the news out there as it happens – as best I can.

I’ll need to write a number of pillar articles before I start curating. I’m planning to start a fitness curation site as well. I actually have always spent much more time studying and practicing to improve my health and fitness than marketing. There may not be too many noticeable changes before those things happen.

The NLP marketing and NLP modeling will still be here – they’ll just be operating quietly in the background as this site transforms into a resource for starting new businesses.

When I’d used InstantUpgrade on the rest of my blogs, everything had worked out fine. This blog is my oldest one though and after the most recent upgrade, wouldn’t display the “Edit Posts” page nor the “Export” page. Fortunately I could still backup though I probably wouldn’t know what to do with it if everything crashed.

I think the issue with this blog was that I was still using the first version of InstantUpgrade instead of the new beta version. When I deleted the old one, the new one installed just fine. When I upgraded though, I was still on WP 2.8.2 instead of 2.8.4. I tried it again and got the same result. When I tried it a 3rd time, I manually typed in the version I wanted to upgrade it to and everything finally worked.

I’ve reactivated and upgraded all my plugins and everything seems to be working now for the first time in quite a while. That’s a relief. I noticed I’d let some spam build up and most of them were for pharamcueticals. Hmm. I wonder what happened to all the porn spam. Not that I miss it of course. It was just a surprise to see that the industries have shifted their spamming activities.

Turns out, there’s a plugin called InstantUpgrade. I’d been using it before WordPress started including that feature in their new versions. My experience has been that feature doesn’t always work. I’ve been several versions behind because I didn’t want to face the prospect of a manual install.

Here’s the way I finally upgraded automatically without using the WP tool. I can’t guarantee it will work for you. It worked on 7 blogs with different WP versions flawlessly and one more almost flawlessly (I can’t seem to access the Edit Posts page anymore):

1. Make sure you back everything up first.
2. Install the InstantUpgrade plugin.
3. Deactivate all your plugins except InstantUpgrade.
4. Go to the InstantUpgrade admin page.
5. Select your preference for HTTP or FTP install (HTTP worked fine for me and doesn’t require entering additional info)
6. Upgrade to the latest version.
7. Log back in.
8. Reactivate your plugins.
9. Check to make sure you can still access everything.

Also, I found that some plugins won’t automatically upgrade. What I figured out it that just about all of them upgrade just fine if you deactivate them first.

Hope that helps. Use these directions at your own risk. They didn’t work perfectly for me and might not for you either.

After giving it some more thought, I realized that my modeling products are most like Paraliminals in nature. The main difference of course is that mine are abilities rather than subjective qualities like self esteem.

Another thing I’ve noticed lately is that if you’re putting an Aweber form on your website, it’s best to use the html instead of the script. For someone like me using Firefox, the script doesn’t appear on the page. It may be the ad blocker I use, I’m not sure. I actually have 3 completed models I’m working on turning into products. The first – graphic design – I’ve mentioned here before. I’m using the new ability myself to create some better covers for my products.

The second is a model from David Gordon. He agreed to let me use the one in his book on modeling as a free downloadable product here. I figured more people would be interested in my products if they knew exactly what kind of thing they’d be getting. That ability is “how to be passionate about something.” I’ve written the script for that already too.

The last one is one I’ve done over the holidays. My brother is finishing up his masters degree in mathematics. He’s pretty much a genius as I often hear of him solving problems that no one else could. I modeled his problem solving ability for a math context. I’d like to see if I can install it in some school kids who might otherwise think they’re “bad at math.”

My experience as a math teacher was that being “good” or “bad” at math was entirely up to the attitude and strategies of each individual student. I’m scheduled to help some kids with their science fair projects in the next couple months so I’ll see about working with them on their math as well.

As chair, I took a large role in the marketing as you can imagine. Our typical attendance over the past few years has been 80-100 people. Most of those conference lost a substantial amount of money. We budgeted for 125. People were saying we were too optimistic and needed to make plans for what to do if fewer people showed up.

I put NLP marketing to the test… and we ended up with 202 paid registrations. I credit much of that to the quality of the speakers, the offer we created and that we focused on creating a good value for people. Of course people wouldn’t have known about all that without the marketing.

You might be surprised to know we had no budget for marketing. We’re a non-profit. We were supposed to break even for the conference when it was all said and done. So far, we’ve made a profit and will have more money coming in from audio recordings we’ll be offering our members. Our biggest problem now is what to do with the extra money so we can bring it back down to break even.

This event consumed most of my time the past couple of months. I should be done with all the final wrap ups in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on a model for graphic design. I’m actually meeting with my exemplar for the last look at the model to make sure it’s all an accurate representation of what she does. It includes everything from project planning and management to what she actually does to make it look good. I’ve learned a lot about it myself.

I’m also going to be working on a model of using violence to save your life. I realize it’s not marketing but I’ve had an interest in self defense for years. I’ve found a couple of fighting systems that are principle rather than technique based so I can model them. The trick to this one will be connecting kinesthetic knowledge through hearing. I think as long as it’s anchored to movements the listener is already familiar with, it will work. One idea I’ve been wondering about is whether “muscle memory” is simply subconscious knowledge.

I’m thinking of doing another business skill after that. I haven’t settled on one in particular so if you have any preferences, let me know – either comment or email me.

If you missed the discussion below, I used David Gordon’s NLP modeling protocol (enhanced by some other modelers) to create a model of direct response copywriters. There were about 68 copywriters worth of interviews that I combed through with an eye to the essential features required for a complete model.

If I were to name the copywriters, you would probably recognize many of their names. If you want to know if a certain top copywriter was included, I can say there’s a 95% chance they were.

What I ended up with is a complete model for anyone who’s ever wanted to learn copywriting. Normally you’ll read a book or take a course and pick up some skills and techniques but you won’t really have the ability or the confidence that a pro has. This model bridges that gap.

In addition to it being a model, I took the acquisition protocol and turned it into a dual induction hypnosis session like Paraliminals. One ear has the modeling protocol and the other has a therapeutic metaphor containing the optional strategies, beliefs and emotions. While most people will go into trance easily with a dual induction session, I made sure of it by overlaying the audio with theta brainwaves. As long as you’re really listening and using headphones, your brain will go into that meditative state.

Since the sequence matters and the copywriters I modeled use a set procedure or checklist, I included one as well. It will help activate the model that your subconscious learned while listening to the audio. As with hypnosis, it’s possible that it might take more than one listening to get the full effect. I’m really not sure.

If you’re not a fan of hypnosis, you can use the included model and acquisition instructions to run the the entire process consciously. You can also listen to one track at a time of the audio. So whatever your learning preference is, there’s a solution for you here.
